Ben4, I use little plastic baskets, available at Office Max and sometimes at Target. There are three sizes -- I use the long thin ones for pencils, the big ones for markers, and the little ones for crayons. I'm sorry I can't get more specific than that, except that I saw these baskets, all in black, at Office Max two days ago.

I take the crayons and markers out of the boxes, so they are loose. I also have a cup up on a shelf in a central location for pencils that need sharpening, and then Miss Slinger or I sharpen them about once a week and refill the pencil baskets.

What type of baskets do you use for the crayons, pencils and markerts - and are the crayons still in boxes or loose? I have plastic baskets with handles that I could use for this - I will probably have four tables ...maybe five? Thanks!

Our preschool supplies all materials. (Parents pay tuition, and that is supposed to cover expenses.) We have baskets of crayons, markers, pencils, scissors, etc... and that works really well. At the end of the day we try to make sure all the caps are on, etc... By the end of the year most children are pretty good at taking care of the supplies. They just need to learn how to do it. Part of the preschool process, I suppose.

Thanks, Debbie. I never thought about my system promoting community and sharing, but you're right. I guess that's another good reason to do it this way.

Strangenewteacher, it's funny to find the ways in which the little ones and the older ones are alike. That's one of the things I like about the mentoring program at my school -- you can get into other people's classrooms and learn a lot of useful things. A middle school teacher did an observation in my room and actually found a few simple things I did that he thought would work with his students.

Interesting how 4 year olds and 12 year olds are very much the same in their arguments ... it sounds like you have a pretty good system working for you.

I think you have a great system I am stingy with my space and would not want little shoe boxes lying around either. Also, your system promotes "community" and sharing. A great learning experience in itself !
