madagascar hissing cockroach

On our first Science Friday, Miss Nelson brought her pet Madagascar Hissing Cockroach.  Isn’t it awesome that THAT is her pet?!  The kids were thrilled, and frankly, so was I.  I’d like the cockroach to come back, so we can spend more time observing it, but at least on this first visit, we got to check it out — and hear the hissing.  Very cool.

  1. I’ve had the millipedes, too. They’re wonderful—as are the cockroaches. Easy to keep and great for showing kids that insects and kin aren’t “icky.” But I admit I’m a bit prejudiced as I was raised by an entomologist. 🙂

  2. I caught a grasshopper that I’m taking to school tomorrow for my science center. My son is currently raising a monarch caterpillar. My counter has two bug boxes on it right now. Science is great! 😀 I would’ve collected this big beetle I found on my walk, but I didn’t have anything more I could put it in, LOL. We have a dead bumblebee too, to look at.

A hissing cockroach… I don’t know if I could do that, or the giant millipedes, but if it works for you, great! LOL! 😀

  3. My sister killed a scorpion today. That is as close as I want to get to critters. We have crickets in our room but they aren’t anyone’s pets. I personally am not fond of bugs. They give me the creeps. However, i am glad you all love them. Differences are what make the world go round.
